Join us on Wednesday, June 20 for our 2nd Annual Picnic and Baseball event at the Bethesda Big Train Baseball Nonprofits Night. The Bethesda Big Train is a team of college all-stars from all over the country who play in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. Bethesda Big Train Baseball plays at Shirley Povich Field in Cabin John Regional Park near Westfield Montgomery Mall.

BLUEBIRD OF HAPPINESS AT RING HOUSE
A group of 25 student volunteers and residents met at Ring House March 11 to talk about the origin of the bluebird of happiness. We learned that the bluebird of happiness is symbolic of hope in Chinese, Navajo, and Russian folklore, and is represented in songs sung by Judy Garland, Paul McCartney, the Zolla Brothers blues band, and others. Participants listened to songs about happiness, told stories of what makes them happy, gave advice on how to maintain happiness, and created their own origami bluebirds of happiness.
LINK GENERATIONS BY THE NUMBERS
We are that much closer to our mission to educate about aging and connect youth with older adults. One of the most striking revelations from these intergenerational encounters is the wisdom expressed by participants of all ages. Here are words of wisdom written together by North Star Academy students and Ingleside at King Farm residents during one of their programs:
– Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% attitude!
– Reach for the moon. If you miss, you’ll land in the stars.
– Dreams are not reality, but who is to say which is which, so follow your dreams and make them reality.
– Don’t be afraid to love again. Not everyone is your ex.
– Silence means you agree to the status quo and what has been said.
– Stand up for yourself.
– You have to know yourself in order to present yourself to others.
– Don’t make someone feel invisible.
– It is important to have someone to share your disappointments and accomplishments.
– One step at a time.
– Not all problems have solutions.

STUDENTS LEARN THAT SENIOR CITIZENS MATTER
The Link Generations Gaithersburg High School Club is growing. Students meet twice a month during lunch and learn about aging and communicating with older adults. Recently, students met and listed the reasons senior citizens matter: They have lots of experience, knowledge, and wisdom; they provide diversity in our views; and they know what the world was before.
REGISTER FOR SUMMER PROGRAMS WITH LINK GENERATIONS
Charles E. Smith Life Communities is recruiting student volunteers for an Intergenerational Art Program based on Opening Minds through Art (OMA) that will be July and August 2018 at Ring House. OMA is an award-winning, nationally recognized art-making program for people with memory loss. The program was developed at Miami University’s Scripps Gerontology Center in Ohio. It is designed to promote the joy, social interaction and accomplishment of people with dementia through small-group sessions where each older adult is paired with a volunteer-partner. The program will be held Thursday mornings from June 28-August 16. Students can earn up to 20 SSL hours.
Join the second 2018 Summer Storytelling Series at Ingleside at King Farm to learn effective strategies for working with older adults, and plan interactive programs based on participants’ interests. The program will be held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June 19-August 2. Students can earn up to 30 SSL hours.
